Program Overview:

Blazing Stars Foundation’s STEM and Cooking Program fuses the wonders of science and culinary arts into an interactive, hands-on learning experience. Designed for youth ages 12 to 19, this program takes students on a journey to uncover how STEM principles power everything from kitchen chemistry to recipe innovation. Through experimentation and guided exploration, young chefs learn that science and cooking are more closely connected than ever imagined!

Program Goals:

  • Ignite a Passion for STEM Through Food: Introduce students to STEM concepts by showing them how chemistry, biology, physics, and math are essential in the kitchen.

Key Components of the STEM and Cooking Program:

Culinary Science Labs:

  • Kitchen Chemistry 101: Students experiment with chemical reactions by baking bread, making emulsions, or even candy-making, observing reactions like fermentation, caramelization, and protein denaturation. They learn about acids and bases, pH levels, and the molecular changes that create the textures and flavors in their food.

    Physics in the Kitchen: Young chefs dive into the physics of heat, energy, and states of matter through experiments like tempering chocolate, creating ice cream, or perfecting a soufflé. They learn how precision, temperature, and time affect the outcome, connecting their work to real-world science.

    Engineering Recipes: Students tackle the challenge of “engineering” recipes by modifying ingredients or cooking techniques to create different textures and flavors. Each recipe is an experiment in trial and error, inspiring resilience and adaptability.
